Raising hard shoulder running speeds will have no impact on safety, says HA

The Highways Agency's decision to raise the speed limit from 50mph to 60mph on the congestion-easing M42 hard shoulder section near Birmingham will improve journey times while having no effect on safety.
That is the Highways Agency's claim following the revision of the hard shoulder speed limit between junctions 3A and 7 on the M42, south-east of Birmingham, which came into force on 16 October.
The claims follow a trial earlier in the year when the agency reported "no discernible impact on safety" while journey times improved by up to 8%.
The active traffic management peak time programme is being extended to other motorways around Birmingham and on sections of the M6.
