Road sign review points the way ahead

Date: 19 September 2008

The Department for Transport has got the ball rolling on what could be a major shake up for the nation's road signs.

DfT is setting up a group made up of industry members that work with road signs on a regular basis. This group of road users, highway authorities and organisations will steer the review that will look to reduce street clutter, improve traffic flow management and road safety.

The AA has already committed to joining the review panel, and the DfT has also invited organisations such as English Heritage and local councils.

The AA's Edmund King has promised to consult his company's members, and said: "Clear, concise relevant road signs help reduce congestion, CO2, frustration and accidents. Confusing signs do the opposite so we welcome a root and branch review of the UK's traffic signing system."
