Seat aims to double sales in next 10 years

Date: 01 December 2008

Seat has set out a three-point plan for doubling its global sales by 2018.

The Spanish brand currently sells about 400,000 cars every year, but is aiming for 800,000 in a decade's time.

UK boss Peter Wyhinney told BusinessCar that there are three methods being put into practice to ensure this becomes a reality.

"Firstly we want to bring new products out in new segments," said Wyhinney. He gave the new upper medium Exeo as an example, revealed at the Paris motor show in October. "The upper medium segment is still very big and at the moment we get zero from it."

This is also the reasoning behind the different bodystyles of the three- and five-door Ibizas.

"We undersold it in the past, but the five-door Ibiza is taking a bigger split now," he said. "Before it was 75/25 in favour of the three-door, but now it is more like 60/40, but of a bigger cake.

The second aim is to sell more of the existing product. "The biggest challenge is awareness," said Wyhinney. "It's about being on people's shopping lists."

Thirdly, Seat aims to enter new global markets and sell in countries in which it has not previously been.
