Toyota and EDF plug in for electric vehicle trials

Date: 12 September 2008

Trials have started of the first plug-in-hybrid car to hit UK shores.

Energy firm EDF is running the right-hand drive vehicle as part of its 4600-strong fleet, where staff will drive it under everyday conditions.

The car is a Toyota Prius that has been converted by the manufacturer so it can be charged through a standard electrical plug. As a result, it can travel further than a standard battery hybrid Prius without the intervention of the engine.

EDF staff will use the vehicle as a pool car during the trial, which is expected to last between 12 and 18 months. It will spend most of its time in London, being driven by everyone from directors to technicians going to meter readings.

Vincent de Rivaz, EDF's chief executive said: "I am delighted EDF Energy will play a pivotal role in trialling this innovative vehicles and technology as part of our ongoing work to make clean electric technology more accessible to everyone."
