Used car sales fall, but prices rise

Date: 03 September 2008

Fewer used cars were sold in 2007, but those that did sold for a higher price, according to auction company BCA's used car market report.

7.1 million used cars were sold last year, down 384,000 on 2006. A total of £33.3billion was spent on vehicles, second only to 2006's £33.9billion.

Private-to-private sales suffered the most, falling 6.1%. Dealers also shifted fewer units, but managed to keep the drop to just 2.7%. Despite the drop in sales numbers, average selling prices actually rose.

BCA claims the fall in sales stems from a period when rising bills and the economic worries were just beginning to kick in.
