Vauxhall Insignia delayed until 2009

Date: 22 July 2008

Vauxhall's new Insignia will not go on sale until early 2009, a delay of at least two months, according to the firm's chairman Bill Parfitt.

Originally scheduled for autumn this year, the all-new car, set to replace the Vectra, is now expected to go on sale in January at the earliest.

Speaking to BusinessCar at the spectacular launch of the upper medium hatch, where Vauxhall rapidly lowered the car from a crane in front of London's Tower Bridge, Bill Parfit said: "The UK on-sale date for Insignia will be early next year."

Parfitt refused to be pinned to an exact month, saying only that the launch would be "early next year".

The delay is the second in the car's gestation.

At the start of 2008 European marketing boss Alain Visser, commenting on the UK launch, said: "We had anticipated an October sales release but the Insignia will start selling in November to make sure we have enough stock with the right cars in the right markets. For the UK, with its fleet strength, that means hatchbacks."

Parfitt refused to admit the car was being delayed, but said that Vauxhall wanted to ensure quality was perfect before the car went on sale.
