Volvo plans expansion of anti-crash system

Date: 01 April 2008   |   Author: Hugh Hunston

Volvo will extend its City Safe anti-tailgating crash system to future models sharing the new XC60's electronics, which vice president of marketing Gerry Keaney claimed re-enforces the company's duty of care commitment to drivers.

Keaney said: "We hope that a positive response from the Thatcham insurance research centre will reflect the crash avoidance system's benefits in lower premiums.

"Duty of care has always been very important to us and City Safe helps make the XC60 the safest ever Volvo, which has obvious corporate sales benefits. It will expand throughout the range and be applied as standard on future cars sharing the XC60's platform. "

This includes the S60's replacement, which Keaney confirmed was part of Volvo's model re-alignment programme to bring the brand into line with German premium ranges.

He said: "We have three saloons spanning two segments while our opposition have two covering the sectors. It makes sense to bring S40 and S60 together."

With Ford's sale of Jaguar and Land Rover to India's Tata Keaney said Volvo wanted and needed to become "more premium in terms of brand positioning and pricing".

He added: "We are mid series and not really premium in the sense of pricing like BMW, we are somewhere in the middle. Elevation comes through new product like the XC60. We cannot raise prices if the market does not accept it and damage RVs."
