VW admits CC name 'hurdle' for new Passat coupe

Date: 14 April 2008

VW has defended the use of the CC name for its new Passat four-door coupe - despite admitting there would be some customer confusion because rival brands use the initials to describe their convertibles and the Passat is a coupe.

The confusion "might be an initial hurdle we'll have to overcome", said VW's product manager for large cars Andrew Waite, speaking to BusinessCar at the car's launch event last week. "Once the car's out there it will become clearer. In terms of naming, our German colleagues lead the way and in the UK the name needs to be the same."

Folding hard-top coupe convertibles such as the Peugeot 207CC have led to the CC initials becoming known as standing for coupe convertible, but in the Passat's case it's actually comfort coupe.

VW is hoping for 5800 sales in the car's first full year of 2009, on top of the 3000 it's aiming for this year following the July launch.

Waite said around 70% of those will be into the corporate sector, with the two diesel models being predictably dominant. "Some buyers [up to half] will come from Passat saloon, the rest from a variety of premium brands," said Waite. "It's a premium Passat saloon with coupe styling."

Though there's no direct like-for-like comparison as the spec levels are different for the CC, Waite said the coupe is around £950 more expensive than the Passat saloon in Sport trim.

Full pricing and spec of the UK models will be released on 1 May.
