VW Scirocco

VW will apply Bluemotion technology to a future version of the Scirocco, according to the company's head of sales and marketing Detlef Wittig.

The three-door coupe, based on the next-generation Golf, will add a 2.0-litre diesel in 140PS tune early next year, following its launch in September, with the economy modifications appearing later in the life cycle.

The application of stop-start technology and aerodynamic changes to the front end should see the 143g/km and 52mpg figures for the 140PS car bettered to below 130g/km and closer to 60mpg.

VW is also promising new levels of refinement from the 2.0-litre TDI, which uses new technology to smooth the engine's operation. A 170PS version is also on the cards later in 2009.

A start price of less than £19,000 for the 1.4 TSi and a sub-180g/km CO2 figure for the 2.0-litre turbo is reckoned by VW to be enough of a business attraction to send 40% of the estimated 9000 annual sales to user-chooser fleets.

The Scirocco's low, wide front grille showcases a new design direction for VW that will be next seen on the Golf Mk6, due to be unveiled at the Paris motor show in September.
