All-new BMW X1: First official pictures and details

Date: 30 May 2009

BMW has revealed the first pictures of the production version of its new small off-roader the X1. The car is shown lightly-disguised while undergoing final testing in Spain.

Previously only seen as a concept car, the X1 will be BMW's fourth and smallest 'X' model and will sit bellow the X3 in the German brand's line-up.

Due to go on sale in October, the X1 is only a few centimetres shorter than the current X3, however, the next generation X3 is expected to grow to sit evenly between the X1 and the much larger X5.

BusinessCar's sources have hinted the X1 will be available in both all-wheel drive 'xDrive' and rear-drive 'sDrive' forms. Power will come from a range of engines including the 177PS 2.0-litre diesel and the 204PS diesel from the 123d.

UK pricing is expected to start from £25,000 and BMW hopes to sell around 5000 X1s a year.

All models will be fitted with BMW's Efficient Dynamics low-CO2 technology.
