All-new Vauxhall Astra: First pictures

Date: 13 May 2009

Vauxhall has revealed the first official pictures of the all-new Astra, its best selling fleet car.

The pictures show the five-door Vauxhall Astra which will have its public debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September and go on sale in the UK at the end of this year.

Styling for the new Astra is in line with that of the Corsa and Insignia.

Although Vauxhall has yet to reveal pictures of the interior, the manufacturer has claimed the quality levels will be similar to those found in the new Insignia.

Commenting on the car's engine line-up a Vauxhall spokesman said: "The highlight of the new Astra's powertrain line-up is the introduction of an all-new, 140PS turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol unit, which builds on Vauxhall's commitment to engine downsizing and reduced emissions/fuel consumption, while retaining the performance of a larger capacity vehicle. The 1.4T joins three further petrol engines, which range from 100PS to 180PS, and four diesel engines ranging from 95PS to 160PS."

The new Astra is larger than the outgoing model and is now 4.4m long, up from 4.25m. The new hatchback also features the option of clever suspension with three settings; standard, sport and tour.

The five-door Vauxhall Astra is expected to be joined by a three-door and estate model in 2010 with a convertible following later.
