Just over half of new cars already have ESP fitted as standard
All new cars sold in Europe from November 2011 will have to be fitted with ESP anti-skid technology, according to a new EU mandate.
The proposals were revealed in May last year have now been set in law by the EU parliament.
Just over half (53%) of all new models on sale are offered with the ESP anti-skid technology as standard across the range, according to automotive testing and research organisation Thatcham.
A further 26% of models have ESP as a mix of standard and optional over the range. 19% of models do not offer ESP and 2% have it as an option across the range.
Under the mandate new vans over 3500kg and all new vehicles with more than eight seats must be fitted with lane departure warning systems and brake assist technology from 2013.
