BMW announces ultra-efficient 1-series

Date: 12 January 2009

BMW's new 116d is set to become the brand's most efficient car with a claimed fuel consumption of 64.2mpg.

The 116PS engine slips under 120g/km barrier with emissions of only 118g/km, yet still gets to 62mph in a respectable 10.2secs. The fuel consumption figures make the 116d as frugal as the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight hybrids. The three- and five-door versions both go on sale in March priced from £17,605 and £18,135 respectively.

Customers opting for the new 116d and the 116i and 118d will also be able to choose a new Sport trim level. In addition to that offered by SE trim, the new spec brings sport seats and steering wheel, heated wing-mirrors and windscreen washer jets, 17-inch alloys and front foglights.

BMW is also offering a Business Edition model in its 5-series range that brings leather, satnav, Bluetooth, and a six-cd changer for a £1000 premium.
