Coupe hints at next Mini derivative

Date: 01 September 2009

Mini is hinting that it will launch a fifth model line with the unveiling of a coupe concept.

The model would join the hatchback, Clubman, convertible and forthcoming off-roader if it were to follow the pattern of the firm's recent history and make the jump from concept to production, as is the case with the Crossover small off-road derivative that should join the coupe concept in production form at this month's Frankfurt motor show ahead of a 2010 launch.

The coupe's production feasibility is also confirmed by Mini fitting it with an engine already in the firm's line-up, the 211PS 1.6 used in the John Cooper Works performance models. Mini quotes 165g/km and 40.9mpg, though hopefully a production version of the two-seater would manage to get below the 161g/km capital allowance point. Over versions using existing Mini engines would obviously also be offered.

Mini even quotes a 250-litre luggage area, which compares with the hatch's 160 litres, and the two models share the same 3714mm length.

An announcement on the car's production future isn't expected until next year, with a potential 2011 launch if it gets the green light.
