DETROIT SHOW: Audi reveals A7 concept

Date: 12 January 2009

Audi has revealed a rival to the Mercedes CLS at the Detroit motor show, dubbed Sportback, that comes in below the 160g/km capital allowance threshold.

Although shown as a concept here, the car is expected to carry the A7 name when it goes into production in 2010.

At nearly five metres long, the five door A7 will sit in the Audi range as a sporty version of the A6, in the same way that the Mercedes CLS offers a sportier option to the E-class.

The Detroit Sportback concept is powered by a 225PS 3.0-litre V6 diesel with a fuel consumption figure of 47.9mpg. The CO2 figure for the car sits at 156g/km, while the 0-60mph time is below seven seconds.

While sharing some of the styling points of the smaller A5, the Audi A7's front hints at how all of the brand's cars will look in the future.

Audi claims that offering a hatchback means the car is not only be sporty, but is also practical with the Sportback concept having a 500 litre boot.
