DETROIT SHOW: VW reveals Bluesport concept to rival MX-5

Date: 11 January 2009

Volkswagen has revealed a 65mpg sports car at the Detroit motor show which could be on user-chooser fleets in two years' time.

The mid-engined rear-drive car dubbed Concept Bluesport will give Volkswagen a rival to the MX-5 within two years should it get the go-ahead to be put into production.

Power for the Bluesport show concept comes from a 180PS 2.0-litre diesel engine which gives the car emissions of 113g/km and an average fuel consumption of 65.7mpg. VW has also hinted a 2.0-litre petrol version could also be available with power around the 210PS mark.

The soft-top two-seater sits on all-new underpinnings and at 3.99m long fits between the Polo and Golf, making it a rival for the Mazda MX-5. VW has refused to comment on pricing, but should the concept get the green-light as expected it would cost from less than £20,000.

Volkswagen quotes the Bluesport diesel's performance as 0-60mph in 6.2 seconds with a top speed of 140mph.

VW has achieved such a low CO2 figure (and high mpg) by keeping weight down to 1200kg, using stop-start, brake energy regeneration and other green technology from the Bluemotion stable.

Being a mid-engined sportscar means that the larger boot is at the front of the car at 112 litres with a smaller rear boot of 70 litres.
