Doubt over new Astravan

Date: 07 October 2009

A replacement for the Astravan has yet to be given the green light, according to a high-ranking GM engineer.

Instead production of the current model will continue while Vauxhall and parent GM decide if it's worth building an all-new commercial vehicle version of the Astra estate.

GM Europe's global vehicle line executive in charge of the Astra, Peter Mertens, said the go-ahead for a van version of the new Astra had not happened, despite the estate - dubbed Sport Tourer - and three-door hatch versions being approved.

"Next year will see the Astra Sport Tourer, then the year after there will be a coupe-ish three-door car."

Despite saying a new Astravan was not certain, Mertens was hopeful it would be built.
