The DVLA has issued fleets with advice designed to minimise the impact of the Royal Mail postal strike on documents such as tax discs and licence renewals.
The DVLA is working with the police to ensure leniency for those that don't have documents arrive in time.
"We always encourage enforcement bodies to check against DVLA's records before taking action, as motorists can drive for up to five days without displaying a tax disc, providing they have taxed their vehicle on time," said a DVLA spokesman.
"In addition, we are working with enforcement bodies to highlight the difficulties motorists may face as a result of industrial action and to help minimise the impact of any disruption.
"The DVLA's electronic services, which include an online and phone service to renew vehicle tax or declare a vehicle off road, help motorists to ensure their vehicle is taxed on time. Online applications can also be made for a first provisional driving licence, renew, update, exchange or replace a driving licence."
However, some services still require the use of the Royal Mail such as photocard licence renewals.
