Fleet boss leaves as Fiat and Alfa focus on 'viable business'

Date: 27 April 2009

Adam Pumfrey

Fiat and Alfa Romeo fleet and remarketing director Adam Pumfrey has left the firm to set up a new business.

A spokesman for Fiat Group said that for the time being national sales manager James McMenamin, would take over the management of Fiat Group's fleet operations under the guidance of sales director Andrew Sproston.

"Fleet remains an integral part of the business," said the spokesman, commenting on Pumfrey's departure. "But in the light of the current economic situation and the exchange rate, we've got to be more structured about the channels we do and focus on viable business."

Fiat's fleet sales were down 49.9% for the first quarter of 2009, while Alfa's figures were down 21.3%.

Pumfrey, who joined Fiat from Mazda at the start of 2007, is remaining tight-lipped about his new venture.

Earlier this year, speaking exclusively to BusinessCar, Pumfrey claimed Fiat Group was one of the best-placed car makers to weather the recession and come out stronger than it went in.

"Last year we made a conscious decision and reduced rental business and short-cycle business," said Pumfrey.

"That means our like-for-like [non-short cycle] fleet business was down only 5%," he claimed. Fiat's overall fleet sales figures were down 20% with short-cycle business included.

"We wanted to make sure supply and demand matched. We're now in a good position and we've got control of the market, and it means we can support the dealers," Pumfrey concluded at the time.
