Fleet drivers worse for mileage when lost

Drivers on work business cover an average of 42 miles in the wrong direction when lost, compared with 23 miles for all other road users, according to a new survey of 4000 motorists.
Continental Tyres claims UK motorists clock up an extra 675m miles per year when lost, with fleet drivers taking 16 minutes to act when they realise they are lost, compared with eight minutes for non-work drivers.
The survey also found more than 20% of at-work drivers claimed to have had an accident or run out of petrol when lost, while six in 10 neglected to admit to their passenger that they were lost, double the non-work driver figure.
Continental also claimed using a satnav system doesn't eliminate the problem, with more than 60% of fleet drivers using navigation still finding themselves lost at least once.
"Because of blindly following satnav, we are losing the art of map reading and only getting more lost," said Continental's director of safety Guy Frobisher. "This survey shows the importance of planning before a journey and serves as a reminder that it's vital to check your vehicle before you go and ensure you know the route."
