Fleets targeted as report calls for compulsory speed limiters

The fleet sector has been identified as a key target in a new report promoting the cause of fitting Intelligent Speed Adaptation to every car in the UK.
The system would use satellite tracking to automatically prevent a vehicle breaking the speed limit.
The Commission for Integrated Transport, a Government advisory group, is behind the report that predicts there will be "substantial benefits" to ISA. However, the focus group representing the fleet sector "did not believe that exceeding the speed limit necessarily reduced a driver's safety. Rather they felt that driving at inappropriate speeds increased risk, which ISA itself may not be able to tackle," according to the report. "The overwhelming message from the group was that the safety benefits associated with ISA were questionable."
But, if financial benefits in terms of fuel and maintenance can be proven, the CfIT claims fleets could see significant benefits, which means the sector could become a priority should the pro-ISA arguments gather pace.
"There is a clear need for a campaign aimed at this group," said the report, which didn't give any hint of a timetable for introduction other than talking of the "overwhelming" cost-benefit ratio over the period 2010-2070.
