GENEVA SHOW: All-new VW Polo revealed

Date: 03 March 2009

Volkswagen has unveiled the fifth generation of its Polo at the Geneva motor show.

The supermini takes its styling influences from its bigger siblings, the Golf and Scirocco, and adds more sweeping front lines and a chunky side appearance.

The Polo will come with six engine options - three 1.2-litre and one 1.4-litre petrols, and two 1.6-litre diesels.

The most popular is predicted to be the 60PS 1.2-litre petrol, taking 43% of sales. The existing E, S, SE trim levels are expected to be carried over to the new car.

VW is also developing a new three-cylinder 1.2-litre diesel to go into the new Bluemotion version of the car in 2010. It comes with stop-start tech and aims to limit emissions to just 87g/km and while providing a claimed 85 miles per gallon. It beats the current CO2 low for a car on sale, slipping under the Smart diesel's 88g/km.

In the meantime, a Bluemotion model is scheduled to appear shortly after launch using the 90PS 1.6-litre diesel to replace the current 1.4-litre. Aerodynamic and gearing tweaks are some of the alterations that will get emissions down 3g/km to 96g/km. Efficiency will remain the same at 74mpg.

The new Polo is due to reach its first UK customers in October this year.
