GENEVA SHOW: VW Polo to become UK's cleanest car

Date: 04 March 2009

Volkswagen looks set to snatch the crown of lowest-emitting passenger car on sale when the latest development in its Bluemotion range arrives around 15 months from now.

The Bluemotion 2 version of its new Polo will emit just 87g/km, beating the Smart Fortwo diesel's 88g/km, and have an average fuel economy figure of around 85mpg compared to the Smart's 85.6mpg.

The huge reduction from the current car's 99g/km comes mainly from a newly developed three-cylinder 1.2-litre diesel. The car is also equipped with stop-start tech, a first for the Polo.

There will, however, also be an interim Bluemotion model scheduled to appear around October using the 90PS 1.6-litre diesel to replace the current 1.4-litre.

Aerodynamic and gearing tweaks are some of the alterations that will get emissions down 3g/km on the current Bluemotion Polo to 96g/km. Economy will remain the same at 74mpg.
