HR Focus: Too busy to take a break

Booking a holiday is turning into a hot topic, with two separate pieces of research showing staff are either too busy or too worried to take time off.

Recruitment website Hire Scores found 23% of UK workers will sacrifice holiday this year thanks to workload, job security fears and understaffing, while 71% of those taking their full holiday entitlement said they would either call the office or check emails while they are away.

Meanwhile, a Chartered Management Institute survey found that more than half of transport and logistics managers are yet to book any summer holiday.

Around 15% are blaming workload, while 380% would prefer to swap the time off for cash. The CMI has launched an Out of Office campaign to encourage workers to take their holiday entitlement.

"It's understandable that a heavy workload and the prospect of returning to a large amount of emails and outstanding tasks can deter people from taking time off, but holiday has a positive impact on staff well-being and boosts productivity," said CMI chief executive Ruth Spellman.

"Encouragingly, 94% of those managers we surveyed say they do encourage their team members to take their full holiday entitlement so there should be no excuse not to get away this summer, even just for a few days."
