Lord Adonis appointed new transport secretary

Date: 05 June 2009

Lord Adonis

Lord Adonis has been promoted to secretary of state for transport by Prime Minister Gordon Brown, replacing Geoff Hoon who quit the post and resigned from the cabinet.

The appointment was part of the Prime Minister's cabinet reshuffle which saw Chancellor Alistair Darling and business minister Lord Mandleson retain their posts.

Lord Adonis was previously transport minister with responsibility for national networks (strategic road network and rail), environment and climate change and cleaner fuels and vehicles.

Further changes within the Department of Transport have yet to be revealed.

Lord Adonis's previous role as transport minister has been filled by Sadiq Khan.
