Manheim enjoys bumper January sales

Date: 09 February 2009

Auction giant Manheim saw a 9.0% (£425) increase in its average selling-price for fleet vehicles in January compared to December.

The overall average selling price across fleet, dealer and manufacturer sectors rose by 5.8% (£337).

Two of the company's 19 auction sites also set their highest sales totals for a month - Colchester sold over 6000 vehicles while Bristol managed nearly 3900. Manheim's online sales system - Simulcast - processed 2100 transactions, 78% more than January 2008.

Mike Pilkington, managing director of Manheim, said the rise is down to re-stocking after the holidays.

"There's no doubt dealers reduced their stocks pre-Christmas and a lot of this current demand has been driven by the need to replenish empty forecourt spaces," said Pilkington.

Pilkington warned, however, that the increase is likely to be temporary rather than permanent.

"Although there appears to be healthy consumer interest, it remains to be seen for just how long this will be sustained," he said.
