Mercedes S-class facelift: first pictures

Date: 09 April 2009

Mercedes has given its flagship S-class a mild facial tweak and increased its efficiency as part of its mid-life update.

The visual alterations are minor and see only the grille and headlights noticeably changing, with LED daytime running lights now coming as standard.

Engine upgrades have seen efficiency improve through the inclusion of an S350 CDI Blue Efficiency option. It is the same engine as the old 320 CDI, but tweaked to boost fuel economy from 34.0 to 37.2mpg and drop CO2 emissions by 20g to 199g/km.

As well as this one diesel, five petrol engines will be included, offering a choice of six-, eight- or 12-cylinder versions.

A petrol-electric hybrid will also be built, but will not be coming to the UK because of the complexities involved in building a right-hand drive version.

The S-class will also offer a range of cameras to aid the driver. They perform tasks such as automatically altering the headlights, and provide night view and lane-keeping assistance. It will also offer a new drowsiness detection system that monitors up to 70 factors to determine if a driver is about to fall asleep at the wheel.

The revised S-class arrives in the UK this autumn.
