New baby petrol engine for Audi A3

Date: 04 September 2009

Audi will be showcasing a new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine for its A3 at the Frankfurt motor show this month that claims fuel economy of 51.3mpg.

The 105PS 1.2 TFSI engine should emit 127g/km of CO2 when it heads to Audi's lower medium hatchback.

Despite the efficiency, the small engine should still be able to get to 62.0mph in 11.1 seconds in the three-door, while the five-door will take 11.3 seconds.

Audi says the new engine's low weight contributes to the efficiency, which is achieved by using aluminium components.

The new engine is not likely to make it to production until early 2010, and more details are expected at the Frankfurt show.
