New Bluemotion model leads sub-121g/km trio of Golfs

Date: 06 July 2009

VW Golf Bluemotion

Volkswagen has announced details of its latest low-CO2 Bluemotion Golf. Arriving in September, the eco version of the sixth generation Golf is powered by a 1.6-litre 105PS diesel engine with a CO2 emissions figure of 107g/km and claimed combined fuel economy of 68.9mpg.

The car is fitted with a stop-start system, as well as low rolling-resistance tyres and aerodynamic tweaks, and it has been lowered by 15mm. VW engineers have also tweaked the gear ratios for better economy.

The Bluemotion model, based on the firm's SE spec, comes in at £17,165 for the three-door version and £585 more for the five-door.

VW is also launching two more sub-121g/km Golf models. There is a non-Bluemotion version of the 105PS 1.6-litre diesel with emissions and economy figures of 119g/km and 62.8mpg respectively. That car costs £410 less than the Bluemotion in SE trim, though is 6.1mpg worse on the combined cycle. The standard 105PS diesel is also offered in basic S specification, starting from £16,050.

A third diesel offers identical economy figures to the non-Bluemotion 105PS engine. Also a 1.6 diesel, but with a 90PS power output, the entry-level diesel Golf comes in at £15,305 and with an emissions figure of 118g/km. That car will spawn another Bluemotion model at the end of this year, with 99g/km and an economy figure of over 75mpg.

These new engines mean the end of the road for the Golf's 110PS 2.0-litre diesel engine, which is no longer available to order.
