Petrol Toyota Auris ducks below 160g/km

Date: 24 April 2009

Toyota has given the Auris a new 1.6-litre engine that is the car's first petrol to make it under the 160g/km capital allowances barrier.

Emissions are down to 146g/km for the automatic 'multimode' version, and 153gkm for the manual.

Despite also improving fuel economy - from 39.8 to 43.5mpg for the manual and 40.9 to 45.6mpg for the auto - Toyota has boosted power by 6% to 132PS.

Toyota has also tweaked the three diesels in the Auris range, improving fuel economy and emissions, although power remains the same.

The 2.2-litre diesel joins the new petrol engine in the sub-160g/km band, down to 158g/km from 164.

Meanwhile, the 1.4-litre drops CO2 output to 125g/km from 132, while the 2.0-litre falls to 138 from 151g/km.

The brand has simplified trim levels, too, including making ESP anti-skid available as an option on 1.4-litre TR models.
