Peugeot and Citroen to launch electric versions of Mitsubishi city car

Date: 22 September 2009

Peugeot Ion

French siblings Peugeot and Citroen are both to launch versions of Mitsibushi's plug-in electric i-Miev city car as part of the continued French-Japanese partnership.

The firms have previously both launched versions of Mitsubishi's Outlander off-roader - the Peugeot 4007 and Citroen C-Crosser - and a new agreement signed earlier this month paves the way for versions of the i-Miev with both Citroen and Peugeot badges.

Peugeot has already confirmed its version, called the Ion, will be on sale by the end of next year, but Citroen is yet to confirm a name or on-sale date for its version.

The Ion will have a potential range of 80 miles and top speed of 80mph, with a six hour recharging time and 30min fast-charge of 80% capacity.

The Mitsubishi i-Miev electric vehicle goes on sale in the UK this November for around £25,000. The first batch of 50 vehicles are allocated to Government EV trials, with the next batch arriving in the UK early next year.

PSA Peugeot Citroen is looking at both electric and hybrid models to join its diesel engines in cutting CO2 emissions. Peugeot has confirmed a hybrid version of its new 3008 Mini-MPV in spring 2011, while Citroen is also due to have its DS5 model on sale by the end of 2011. A plug-in rechargeable hybrid will also be launched in 2012, but it's not yet clear which vehicle or brand will be first to market with that technology.
