Peugeot promises diesel hybrid within 18 months

Date: 25 August 2009

Peugeot has revealed a car it said "preludes" the production version of its 3008 Hybrid4 model.

The French firm claimed its fourwheel drive Nissan Qashqai rival will have a CO2 figure of 99g/km, which equates to a 35% improvement over the equivalent diesel.

The hybrid system, like that developed by Toyota, will be able to power the car in sole electric, sole diesel or combined mode, according to the style of driving. It is likely to be the first diesel hybrid to market, with all hybrids already on sale combining petrol engines with electric motors.

The electric motors drive the rear wheels and the diesel engine the front, which gives 4x4 capability with the packaging compromises of sending drive to the back of the car.

Peugeot said it "intends eventually to develop a range of Hybrid4 vehicles".
