Police require ICFM qualification for fleet managers

Police fleets are now requiring that potential new managers hold at least a diploma in fleet management, according to the Institute of Car Fleet Managers.
John Webb, a council member of the ICFM told an ACFO meeting that ICFM qualification is becoming a requirement and the police are stipulating a diploma level qualification as a minimum.
Webb went on to say that existing police fleet managers are also taking up the Institute's training: "Every course has two or three police fleet managers attending."
He also claimed the National Association of Police Fleet Managers was recommending members undergo the training.
The Association of Chief Police Officers said there is no overall guideline on ICFM membership, but added: "Each force has its own criteria for a fleet manager, which sometimes includes membership of the ICFM."
The ICFM hoped the course will one day be taken as a "gold standard" for fleet management. Webb also told the ACFO meeting, taking place at Peugeot's headquarters in Coventry, the traditional image of a fleet manager as "someone who has been dragged up from the workplace" was no longer true.
"The modern fleet manager comes from a procurement or HR background," he said.
