Prius and Insight hybrids win five-star crash rating

Date: 08 September 2009

The two latest family hybrids - Toyota's Prius and the Honda Insight - have both scored five stars in the most recent round of Euro NCAP crash tests.

Seven of the eight cars tested managed the maximum five stars, with only the new Citroen C3 falling short with a score of four.

NCAP also awarded five stars to the Kia Sorento, the Renault Grand Scenic, the Skoda Yeti, Subaru's Legacy and the VW Polo.

Praise was given to the new Prius (pictured) and Insight for their pedestrian safety levels, while the Insight, Sorento and Yeti were all singled out for their whiplash protection.

The Citroen C3 failed to gain the full five stars thanks to the new NCAP marking system which requires ESP anti-skid control to be standard across the majority of a car's range.

The C3 was also marked down as having 'poor' whiplash protection, but it and the Renault were praised for their driver controlled limitation system.
