RAC Report at odds with fleet data

Date: 24 July 2009

Company car drivers are not letting rising costs get between them and their vehicles, according to the RAC's 2009 Report on Motoring.

The findings published in the document state that 85% of drivers would find it hard to adjust to life without their car, despite 87% seeing their motoring costs rising, while less than 50% cite the cost of motoring as their most concerning matter. The stats also show there has been no change in the amount of drivers opting for cars with more efficient fuel usage in the past 18 months. This statistic is, however, at odds with data from both the leasing industry and the SMMT, both of which have shown significant decreases in the average CO2 output (directly linked to improving mpg) of new company cars.

However, the RAC claims that three-quarters of those surveyed are driving in a more efficient way.

Out of the workplace, 32% of respondents said it wasn't likely they would reduce the number of personal journeys. In fact 27% said they made more short trips in the last year than previously, while 16% took more long journeys.

Adrian Tink, motoring strategist for RAC, said: "Fleet drivers are more likely to be using their vehicles out of necessity. But it's interesting to note how cost is not dissuading drivers from doing more journeys overall.

"It seems fleet drivers will continue to motor-on until the overall cost of motoring has a major impact on them," he said.
