Recession blamed as Budget pushed back to April

Date: 13 February 2009

Alistair Darling

The 2009 Budget has been delayed until 22 April, its latest date since Gordon Brown's first Budget in 1997.

The late arrival of this year's statement, due to be delivered to the House of Commons by Alistair Darling, has been put back beyond Parliament's Easter break and into the new tax year.

It's also after the international economic summit taking place between the G20 countries in London on 2 April.

The last time the Budget was delivered later than 22 April in a year that didn't hold a general election was 1945.
