Small hints at recovery as April fleet registrations show improvement

Date: 08 May 2009

April's fleet registrations gave a glimpse of an improving market, with a monthly fleet registration figure of 21.8% down on April 2008. While not good in isolation, April was a marked improvement on the year-to-date figure, which now stands at 28.7% down on the first four months of 2008.

In April, 72,363 new cars were registered to the fleet sector, compared with 92,571 in April 2008.

The overall market was behind fleet in April at 24.0%, though it's 0.2 percentage points better over January-April 2009 at 28.52% down.

Ford had a strong April, just 2.1% down to grab a 22.7% share of the market, with Vauxhall down 16.7% to take 19.8% of April's sales.

Nissan (-6.3%), Kia (-16.8%) and Honda (-12.9%) all had a decent April, while not enjoying it so much were Renault (-63.2%), Fiat (-48.2%) and Saab (-83.5%). Renault actually slipped to twelfth in the manufacturer's table.

Some of the smaller brands also had a good month, with Alfa Romeo, Chevrolet, Hyundai and Jaguar all up on April 2008.
