Van fleets finally make CO2 link

Date: 15 December 2009

Commercial vehicle operators are finally taking emissions into account when it comes to acquiring new vehicles, according to Peugeot.

"There have been some major clients who didn't realise CO2 means mpg, but many have clicked on and the CO2 level on vans is the question I've been asked more in 2009 than in the previous five years combined because people are now making that link," said Peugeot fleet and LCV boss Phil Robson. He said businesses are increasingly downsizing to smaller vans like the French brand's Bipper light van as they make the link between CO2 and fuel consumption.

The van market, which has been decimated by the recession in 2009, should start to return next year, according to Robson. "At the beginning of the year particularly we saw people putting off purchasing decisions, but it won't be viable to do that again next year," he said. "Big fleet business scaled back but it didn't fade away."
