Vauxhall reveals Insignia Ecoflex

Date: 20 April 2009

Vauxhall has revealed details of the eco version of its new Insignia.

Vauxhall is hoping to win sales from rivals by offering one of the most competent all-round packages with the car not only offering low-CO2 and high mpg figures, but without any decrease in performance.

The Insignia Ecoflex will come to the market with a CO2 figure of 136g/km for the hatchback version along with a 54.7mpg combined fuel stat. This puts it in the same 18% benefit-in-kind tax bracket as cars such as the VW Passat Bluemotion 2 and the Ford Mondeo Econetic.

However, Vauxhall quotes a significantly faster 0-60mph time than its rivals of 8.9 seconds. The Passat comes in at 11.7secs and the Mondeo at 10.4secs.

Vauxhall's engineers have based the Insignia Ecoflex on the 160PS 2.0-litre diesel model.

To achieve the efficiency improvements over the standard 154g/km and 48.7mpg 160PS 2.0 diesel Insignia, Vauxhall's boffins have introduced an under-body tray to smooth airflow around the car as well as lower the ride height by 10mm. Low rolling resistance tyres are fitted and the gearing changed for a more economic set-up. The driver also gain a gear-change indicator to help drive the car in the most efficient way.

Prices start from £19,600 for the Exclusive trim level with first deliveries arriving in July.
