Warning over shift from summer time

Date: 12 November 2009

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has renewed its calls for an end to the autumn changing of the clocks and a move to a system that would give an extra hour of evening daylight all year round.

Three Government reports produced this year concluded that a new system would save lives, with the National Audit Office finding a 10% increase in fatal or serious accidents involving pedestrians in the four weeks after the change.

"We will continue to call for a change which, we believe, would save lives and reduce injuries," said RoSPA chief executive Tom Mullarkey. "In the meantime we urge road users to remember the responsibility they have to the safety of those around them."
