Welsh police to ignore motorway crashes

Date: 18 February 2009

Welsh police will stop responding to motorway crashes from April, according to a report on the BBC.

South Wales Police chief constable Barbara Wilding told BBC Wales that her force can't afford to dedicate resources to clearing accidents and directing traffic. She has called for more traffic officers or more money for policing to deal with the issue.

"We will be building a business case to the Welsh Assembly government to say if you want us to carry on policing the motorway, responding to those issues, then you must pay for it," said Ms Wilding.

Wilding said the police would remain on the road in a crime-fighting role.

Currently England has dedicated traffic officers, but Wales does not.

The Welsh Assembly government's enterprise and learning committee is also campaigning for the creation of a traffic officer role, which could be trialled along the A55.
