Workplace parking tax returns to spotlight

Date: 02 November 2009

Workplace parking taxes could become a nationwide epidemic following the publication of a new local government advice report.

The spectre of local authorities across the country following Nottingham City Council's lead and introducing a Workplace Parking Levy was raised by the New Local Government Network's report into authorities' finances and how the "tsunami of a public recession" could cause severe damage to local services.

The report said councils should "potentially explore alternative revenue raising powers including the workplace parking levy once the recession ends," as part of a drive to increase incoming finances.

The NLGN was established in 1996 and calls itself a "dynamic and independent think tank committed to promoting the decentralisation of power, public services reform, enhancing local governance and empowering communities."

Meanwhile, the Government has confirmed it is to develop guidelines for local authorities looking to introduce a WPL, though it won't make them a statutory requirement.
