Alternative fuel plan for M4

Date: 25 February 2010

The Government has confirmed plans for the M4 to become a green highway, with a range of low-carbon fuels set to be available between London and south Wales.

The move aims to promote electric, hydrogen, compressed natural gas and bio-methane.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change will invest £7.2m in the development of hydrogen and fuel cell technology in South Wales, setting it up as the biggest low-carbon refuelling infrastructure in the UK.

There are also plans to install filling points in Swindon and London, as well as further developments into the Midlands.
