BMW confirms new brand and first EV for 2011

Date: 26 April 2010

BMW has confirmed its first electric vehicle with the launch of a new sub-brand coming in 2013.

The Megacity Vehicle will be a rear-engined car around the size of a lower medium hatchback, and though BMW isn't releasing projected range or performance figures, it claims it will be "creating new benchmarks for electric mobility", according to BMW AG chairman Norbert Reithofer.

The German firm is promising that the Megacity Vehicle will be "significantly lighter than conventional cars" as weight is crucial to achievable range, and BMW claims it is "broaching entirely new territory" in terms of materials.

The brand has been running a fleet of more than 600 development Mini E models since last year across Germany, the USA and Britain, though that car isn't scheduled to make it beyond the prototype stage.
