The start point for the best source of fleet information

British Gas turns mentor

Date: 17 November 2010

British Gas is launching a road safety mentoring scheme to help other organisations implement occupational road-risk management processes.

The Driving for Better Business champion has more than 10,000 vans, 1900 company cars and 24 heavy goods vehicles on its fleet, as well as 2000 grey fleet drivers, and has brought in a series of measures under its safe-driving programme that have seen incident rates drop by more than 30% in five years.

"Many organisations, particularly smaller businesses, often don't have the capacity to implement specific road safety initiatives. Through this innovative mentoring scheme, British Gas and other 'business champions' can work with organisations in their respective areas to help them put measures in place," said Jon York, British Gas fleet operations manager. "I'm already looking at mentoring organisations that are local to me and I'm also working with our sub-contractors on the introduction of safe-driving initiatives."

Wakefield-based York will look at risk assessments for local fleets, and measures such as driving licence checking.
