Construction firms cuts crashes by third

Maintenance and construction company Kier Islington has cut vehicle crashes by almost a third in a year thanks to driver education and a range of safe-driving initiatives.
The firm is the latest to join Driving for Better Business, the government's at-work driving safety campaign.
It is the 46th organisation to become a business champion under the scheme.
The firm is now suggesting the measures to its 120 subcontractors and supply chain partners encouraging them to adopt a similar approach to occupational road risk management.
On the basis that every recorded road accident will cost Kier Islington a minimum of £250, the total cost in 2008 was £12,000 based on 48 incidents.
In 2009, the total cost dropped due to the implementation of work-related road safety measures with a reduction in vehicle accidents to £8500 (34 incidents) - delivering a saving of £3500. The majority of incidents do not involve third party claims and are largely low speed manoeuvring incidents.
Kier Islington transport manager Jonathan Amechi said: "Through general health and safety initiatives, safe systems of work and Kier-led work-related road safety campaigns and increased driver education, we have been able to reduce vehicle accidents by raising awareness of the importance of road safety.
"Driving safely and considerate use of our vehicles is now central to who we are and what we do.''
Kier Islington operates a 172-strong light commercial vehicle fleet and two company cars with 26 employees driving their own vehicles on business trips.
