Dacia set for 2012 UK launch

Date: 19 March 2010

Renault will launch its Dacia brand in the UK at the end of 2012 after shelving plans to introduce it this year.

The firm had been aiming to make Sandero, its Budget five-door hatchback model, available in the UK by 2010, but pulled back amid concerns about profitability.

Now, Renault has confirmed it will launch Dacia in 2012, starting with Duster, a compact off-roader. UK pricing and dealer network structure will be confirmed closer to launch.

As a guide, Duster will sell abroad from ?11,900 (£10,800) in 4x2 guise.

The Romanian marque has trebled sales worldwide over the past five years from 100,000 to 311,874 under Renault's leadership. In Europe, it posted a 91% sales increase in 2009 with French and German buyers topping the list.

Renault UK managing director Roland Bouchara said: "We've been watching Dacia's remarkable success closely over the last few years, so I'm thrilled that we'll soon be able to start showing the public what the fuss has been about. With value-for-money, downsizing, fuel economy and emissions becoming increasingly important, we want to show that Dacia can appeal to the head, heart and wallet."
