The start point for the best source of fleet information

Demand snowballs for winter tyres

Date: 30 November 2010

Kwik-Fit Fleet has reported a surge in demand for winter tyres in the last two months as motorists gear up for the onset of harsher weather.

The company, which launched its winter tyre programme in September, said it had fitted 2200 winter tyres a week since the start of October. It warned a global tyre shortage, triggered by recovering car sales in the wake of the recession coupled with legislation to promote the use of winter tyres, meant supply may not be sufficient to meet demand.

Peter Lambert, sales director, Kwik-Fit Fleet, said: "We have been inundated with calls from public and private sector fleets wanting to equip vehicles with tyres better suited to cold weather, ice and snow."

One company quick off the mark in getting prepared for the freeze is British Gas, which has fitted winter tyres to 200 vans operating in the Peak District and the Scottish Highlands.

Automotive software specialist Mycompanyfleet said fleet managers should weigh up the expense of fitting winter tyres against the savings to be made in reduced accident costs before deciding whether cold weather tyres were a viable option.

Luke Hicks, business executive at MyCompanyFleet, said: "Fleet managers have to balance the additional tyre costs against the likelihood of increased accident rates without the tyres, which have been proved to be more effective in braking and steering in both cold and wet conditions."

Following a Government report calling for the industry to be better prepared for cold weather conditions, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders is recommending the use of cold weather tyres.
