Fiat to grow low-CO2 TwinAir range

Date: 19 November 2010

Fiat is planning to grow both the number of versions of its ultra-low CO2 TwinAir engine and also the number of cars in which the engines are offered, according to Franco Bay, part of the TwinAir development team.

The 875cc two-cylinder petrol engine is currently only available in the Fiat 500 in turbocharged 85hp form which produces 95g/km CO2. However, Bay said the manufacturer was also planning a non-turbo 65hp version and more powerful 105hp version.

Bay said that because the TwinAir engine was 23% smaller than a four-cylinder engine it allowed room for hybrid components to be installed in the 500.

He added: "The hybrid version is already under development and will have further CO2 and mpg benefits. It's in the prototype stage and is a mild hybrid."
