The start point for the best source of fleet information

Fresh focus on drivers required

Date: 05 May 2010   |   Author: Rachel Burgess

Fleet management focus is still on vehicles rather than users despite a growing need to educate drivers about consequences of their driving.

That's according to Jonathan Mosley, sales and marketing director of E-training World, speaking at the firm's fleet workshop last month. He said firms need to become more strategic in developing a driver approach as well as existing fleet strategies. "Drivers influence whole-life costs of the vehicles. If we manage our drivers properly, we can reduce cost in the business," he said.

Aaron Brown, MD of fleet management firm In2Fleet, added driver management is inevitable in the future. He anticipates cars and vans being structured like HGVs with telematics as standard.

"Drivers will receive bonuses for achieving dashboard business KPIs," Brown said. "Financial pressures on companies will continue and force business behavioural changes, for example, CO2 reduction and charges by mile used."

But MD of E-training World Graham Hurdle said most managers see driver management as "some sort of painful compliancy". The key is to view it positively rather than negatively: "It needs to be turned around. What can firms achieve from driver management? For example, cost-savings, compliancy or to meet the requirements of others - looking good in tenders perhaps."

There also needs to be incentives and an education programme to get employees' buy-in, Hurdle added.
